Projeto Sondilá was founded and is led by Diego Calasso, a multifaceted artist born in São Paulo and based in Europe for many years. With experience in music, theater, capoeira, and circus, Diego created Sondilá with the intention of building an open space for artistic collaboration and the exchange of knowledge — honoring orality and the living force within popular culture.
Throughout its history, the project has moved through different musical formations and languages — from intimate duo to big band, from street percussion to electronic fusions, from erudite music to the ancestral rhythms of Afro-Brazilian traditions. Rhythms such as samba, maracatu, afrobeat, cumbia, blues, and ijexá have all been and continue to be part of this story, composing a broad and ever-evolving sonic palette. The fusion of Brazilian rhythms with other Latin American sounds and electronic elements makes Sondilá a dynamic space, adaptable to diverse contexts — from traditional stages to performances in alternative spaces.
Projeto Sondilá has always been more than music — it is a space for encounter, learning, and the transmission of knowledge. Over the years, the project has functioned as a living bridge between Brazil and Europe, welcoming masters of capoeira, percussion, and other expressions of Brazilian popular culture, and creating conditions for their knowledge to reach new audiences and new generations.
Along this path, Sondilá promotes intergenerational dialogue, giving voice to elders and honoring orality as a legitimate and powerful form of cultural transmission. As the fruit of these exchanges, numerous events and workshops have been held, and two albums have been recorded, bringing together renowned masters such as Brasília, Vitor da Trindade, Zé Antônio, Aparício Bolinha, and Mestre Alemão, as well as singer and composer Miguel Baraka — a partnership that culminated in the show Terreiro Lírico.
More than a musical group, Sondilá is a bridge between cultures, one that believes in music, art, and movement as spaces for encounter, reflection, and celebration. A living, generous project — always open to the world.
